Common Reasons Air Conditioners Leak Water

Posted on: 9 July 2020

When you detect that your air conditioner is leaking water, it is safe to say that you have a problem on your hands. However, there is no need to panic. More often than not, the cause of this problem is not a major one and can quickly be addressed. Discover some of the common causes behind this problem so that you know what to do.

Clogged Line

By far, one of the most common reasons for this issue is a clogged line. More specifically, a clogged drain line. The drain line functions just as it sounds, in that it is intended to move moisture out and away from the air conditioner unit. Problems arise when this drain line becomes clogged, which causes an obstruction that prevents the water from flowing through. Most commonly, drain lines clog when there are dirt and debris inside the unit that makes its way into the drain line.

Low Refrigerant

A reduced amount of refrigerant can also be the culprit behind water leaking from an air conditioner. In addition to ensuring that the air that flows through the system is cooled, the refrigerant is also used to help prevent the coils from freezing by ensuring that there is a healthy amount of pressure in the system. When this does not happen, the frozen coils then cause issues within the drain pain which causes it to overflow and leak.

Dirty Air Filter

A dirty air filter can also cause issues. Air filters trap all sorts of contaminants ranging from dust to pet dander to dirt. Over time, these contaminants dirty the air filter. When the air filter is dirty, airflow within the unit is restricted, which can cause the coils to freeze. It is a good practice to change the air filter at least once every few months to avoid this sort of mishap.

Common Does Not Mean DIY

Just because the reason for the leak is common and often easy to repair, it does not mean that you should attempt to complete the task on your own. It is always advisable to allow an air conditioner repair technician to perform these repairs for you. Not only can you be more confident that the job has been performed correctly and safely, but with the help of a professional you can also be certain that the issue was diagnosed accurately.

Keep these factors in mind as you determine what the source of the problem might be.

Irrigation Implementation: An Overview

When I decided to install an irrigation system in my yard, I thought it would be an easy project. I had no idea how much was really involved in the process, from connecting the sprinkler system to the main plumbing line all the way to burying the individual lines for the sprinkler heads. After researching the entire process and learning as I went, I created this site to give others the benefit of my experience. I hope that the information here helps you be better prepared for what you can expect out of your irrigation system installation, including knowing when it's time to turn to a plumber for help.
