A Few Tips For Sump Pump Installation

Posted on: 26 June 2020

A sump pump is a relatively simple machine that could save your home from thousands of dollars in flooding repairs. A sump is basically a hole or pit in the ground where water can collect. By placing a pump in that hole, you can pump water out of your home instead of allowing it to pool. If you are going to attempt a sump pump installation by yourself, make sure that you find the lowest point in your basement to dig your sump. Otherwise, the water will not run into the pump. Here are a few more tips to think about before you decide to install a sump pump.

Submersible vs. Pedestal

There are two types of pumps. Submersible pumps are placed completely within the sump hole you will dig, while pedestal pumps will have the motor sitting outside of potential water that may puddle. Since submersible pumps are completely under the surface, they are much quieter. They do cost a bit more, but most homeowners agree that the sound benefits are worth it. Pedestal pumps are still effective; they just have a bit of a hum.

Concrete Issues

If you have a finished basement, you will need to remove some concrete before you have enough space to install the pump. Many people become overwhelmed at this step, but a jackhammer can take care of cement easily. Again, it is better to take the time to install a sump pump right instead of failing to do so and having your basement flood. When you think about it that way, it is easier to knock out some concrete than trying to salvage your home.

The Discharge Pipe

Take special care to plan out where the discharge pipe will lead. If you are not careful about it, pumped-out water could eventually find a way back into your home, negating the effectiveness of the pump. Pump the water to a place that will then run away from your home.

In conclusion, installing a sump pump on your own is not impossible, though it does require some planning and hard work. If you feel like you are not up to the task or simply do not have the time to do it how it needs to be done, call a plumber offering sump pump installation services in your area. Many plumbers install sump pumps for relatively cheap (way cheaper than flood repairs) and can get it done in just a few days.  Talk to a plumber near you for more information.

Irrigation Implementation: An Overview

When I decided to install an irrigation system in my yard, I thought it would be an easy project. I had no idea how much was really involved in the process, from connecting the sprinkler system to the main plumbing line all the way to burying the individual lines for the sprinkler heads. After researching the entire process and learning as I went, I created this site to give others the benefit of my experience. I hope that the information here helps you be better prepared for what you can expect out of your irrigation system installation, including knowing when it's time to turn to a plumber for help.
